The four fundamental tools of a leader.

According to Keith Davis, “Leadership is the ability to persuade others to seek defined objectives enthusiastically. It is the human factor that binds a group together and motivates it towards goals.”

Leadership is an important function of management which helps to maximize efficiency and to achieve organizational goals. If you are a team leader who is responsible to achieve a certain objective through some people and with some other resources there are many roles you perform simultaneously, out of many roles, functions there are four fundamental tools important for any manager to get success through his team. These four fundamental tools are Evaluate: Guide, Support, and Control (EGSC).

1. Evaluate:

Evaluation is a systematic determination of a subject’s merit, worth, and significance, using criteria governed by a set of standards. Evaluation helps in decision-making process to choose the best options among all towards achieving the goal. Analysis is the first part in decision-making process and evaluation is based on the analysis. There is a difference between the two i.e. An analysis is an examination of the elements or structure of something, as a basis for discussion or interpretation. Evaluation is your conclusion about a source, based on evidence as to what you hold to be most important or effective.

2.Guide:

Guidance here means instructing the subordinates the way they have to perform their work effectively and efficiently.

Guidance can also be looked at as a program or service to individuals based upon the need of each individual giving him the best possible direction towards his objective. As a process, guidance is not a simple matter but involves a series of actions or progressive steps that move towards a goal. Guidance to an individual can be Moral, educational, vocational, personal, health, and social.

3.Support:

Each individual has a different capacity to perform. As a leader, one must understand his team members strengths and weaknesses. Often the instruction and guidance are given to individuals and the leader waits for miracle results. It is the prime job of a manager to support in whatever aspect his team member needs so that he can feel that he is not alone e.g. if you assign a person to climb a wall and he is not well equipped nor trained to do so how he will do that? Rather sometimes it is assumed that provided support is enough it maybe yes but how to use it could be the missing part.

4.Control

After providing guidance and support leader must formulate the controlling tools as most of the time the provided support, authority, etc. is misused, misused also include overuse, underuse, or totally not used. Controlling tools will also determine the plan implementation in the right direction or other direction which will again lead the leader towards analysis and evaluation either his team will be able to achieve the target on given timeline with available resources.
